Up in Smoke: Demystifying the Medical Marijuana Movement in MO

ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM As of January 1, 2017, minor marijuana possession offenses in Missouri are no longer punishable by incarceration. This new law is somewhat limited in nature; however, decriminalization of marijuana is often viewed as a first step towards legalizing medical marijuana within a state. While marijuana is still illegal under federal law and regulated as a controlled substance, half of the states have passed laws legalizing marijuana for medicinal use. Furthermore, the Missouri General Assembly has already legalized the use of Cannabidiol (CBD), a component of marijuana, for treatment of "intractable epilepsy.” Missouri’s recent legislative efforts and polls suggest that medical marijuana will likely gain a legal foothold in Missouri in the near future. At its 2017 Symposium, the Saint Louis University Public Law Review will host a diverse range of scholars to discuss the implications surrounding state legalization of medical marijuana.
