An unemployed pot-smoking slacker and amateur drummer, Anthony Stoner (Tommy Chong), ditches his strict parents and hits the road. Eventually he meets up with kindred spirit Pedro de Pacas (Cheech Marin), who is more than happy to join forces with a fellow marijuana enthusiast. When the drug-ingesting duo is soon arrested for possession of marijuana, Anthony and Pedro get released on a technicality, allowing them to continue their many misadventures – and ultimately, compete in a rock band contest, where they perform the raucous tune “Earache My Eye.” A hilarious comedy that also serves as a counterculture epic in its own right, Up in Smoke was a huge success, earning $44,364,244 (then a very impressive gross), and ultimately spawning six more feature films featuring Cheech and Chong doing what they do best – getting high, delivering killer one-liners, and getting away with seemingly any form of crime and misadventure.
