USF Alumni Book Group: S-Town and Stoner by John Williams

Please join us for our third book group! Whether you're a USF alum or want to meet academically minded people to talk social issues, you are most welcome! In July, we will be discussing S-Town, the newest serial podcast from Serial and This American Life. The podcast is available for free here: https://stownpodcast.org/ In addition, we will be reading Stoner by John Williams, which has been called by NYT "The greatest novel you've never read." Stoner was a major inspiration for the writing of S-Town, and we will discuss the shared themes of the working-class intellectual, masculinity and mental illness, and the transcendent power of literature, among others. Overview: William Stoner is born at the end of the nineteenth century into a dirt-poor Missouri farming family. Sent to the state university to study agronomy, he instead falls in love with English literature and embraces a scholar’s life. https://www.amazon.com/Stoner-York-Review-Book…/…/1590171993
