Before Parliament resumes in September, I and other members the Health Committee, will be tasked with reviewing C-45, an act respecting cannabis and to amend the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, the Criminal Code and other Acts. The bill has three specific objectives: 1. Create a legal and regulated market for cannabis to take profits out of the hands of criminals and organized crime. 2. Protect public health through strict product requirements for safety and quality. 3. Impose strict serious criminal penalties for those who provide cannabis to young people. Bill C-45 was created after extensive consultation with law enforcement, health and safety experts, and the hard work of the Task Force on Cannabis Legalization and Regulation. Before we hear expert testimony from witnesses at the Health Committee and begin an in-depth review of the legislation, I want to hear from you. On August 29, I will host a town hall at the St. James Civic Centre from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. to discuss the legislation and its objectives and to hear your thoughts. I hope you can join me.
