Some Words on the Artists: SCIENTIST- "Scientist" Hopeton Overton Brown is a legendary Jamaican recording engineer and producer who has been a legacy creator in the history and evolution of Reggae, Dub, and Dancehall. Scientist is most know for his early 1980's collaborations with the Roots Radics band and producer Henry Jungo Lawes while working as an assistant to King Tubby. Barrington Levy, Yellow Man and countless other vocalists foundation records were mixed by Scientist. Scientists sound and mixing techniques along with many iconic Dub records to his credit greatly influenced not only the history of Reggae, Dub and Dancehall but the sound of almost all hip hop, dance, and electronic music to follow. Scientist is making a rare live appearance here in Minneapolis aided by Jamaican roots and dancehall vocalist Hempress Sativa, a collaboration that highlights both the history of Jamaican sound system performance and the current forward creative momentum of these artists. PEAKING LIGHTS- Fresh off a recent Europe tour and a new excellent double LP the Fifth State of Consciousness, Los Angles duo Peaking Lights make a visit to Minneapolis for the first time in many years. Peaking Lights finds their roots in Madison WI were the duo created their sound using home build synths and modified electronic music machines of all kinds, continually pushing their dreamy dub influenced sound to new realms of clarity and dance ability. The Fifth State of Consciousness is Peaking Lights fifth full length release and takes another step in a rich progression years in the making by creating a release that draws on the past catalog but further perfects many ideas and experimentation relating to an interplay between dance oriented music and sounds that are more meditative. Peaking Lights are riding a special moment right now in their capabilities as creators and live performers. FEEL FREE HI FI- Feel Free Hi Fi is a custom built mobile Sound System project created by Derek Maxwell and Shawn Reed. The duo met in the Twin Cities after both had moved to the cities at similar times and quickly identified in each other a deep passion for music making and pushing creative boundaries. Reed and Maxwell both have a prolific history relating to underground music across many genres but have focused the Feel Free sound on creating an eclectic mix of selections by highlighting the music that resounds with mobile sound systems the best: Reggae, Dub, Dancehall, Drum and Bass, UK Garage, Grime and all things they can squeeze in between and beyond. They live dub their mixes using a variety of effects units, drum machines and synths that coupled with the systems physical sound abilities makes for a unique live sound experience.
