The official launch took place Friday, October 6 from 12pm - 2pm at the new WeWork Apollo. #HEMPtober, a new grassroots project, will feature an educational campaign designed to raise awareness on how HEMP offers a solution to the rising environmental and health issues in the world. The initiative will not only educate the general public, but will encourage more businesses and consumers to use Hemp products. Our goal is to motivate at least 50 businesses and 300 consumers to incorporate hemp into their daily lives through production and consumption. Hemp was an important crop in American history and used for hundreds of eco-friendly applications until it was completely outlawed in 1970 by the Controlled Substances Act. Industrial hemp is one of the fastest growing biomasses on earth. It is a variety of the cannabis plant species known for its cellulosic and woody fibers. Industrial hemp is economically sustainable, environmentally regenerative, and nutritionally complete. To date, more than 31 states have implemented pilot programs for hemp farming legislation. #HEMPtober will reintroduce American businesses and consumers to this billion dollar crop that was a staple used for clothing, building, etc. before being replaced with environmentally unfriendly products such as plastic. This multifaceted crop is also a whole food source for fiber, protein, and amino acids. The time to educate businesses and consumers about the need for an environmentally safe alternative to plastics is long overdue. A study was just released confirming that microplastics, small plastic particles in the environment, are contaminating water sources throughout the world. The highest levels of contamination, found by an investigation conducted by Orb Media, are in the United States with levels as high as 94%. This is affecting wildlife and drinking water everywhere. Currently close to 300m tonnes of plastic is produced every year. Hemp is known to contain around 65-70% cellulose, an organic compound composed of glucose units that can be used for plant based products. “Hemp cellulose can be extracted and used to make cellophane, rayon, celluloid and a range of related plastics” as reported by Seshata of Sensi Seeds. #HEMPtober participants are being asked to host events throughout the city and pursue businesses in order to raise awareness regarding the reality of plastic contamination. As a part of the campaign we will encourage the use of industrial hemp and processing. We have a Eco themed pop-up showcasing products made with Hemp at the new Femme Fatale DC @ Union Social located at 100 Florida Avenue NE, open to the public since October 12. The main event will take place their on Friday, October 27 from 6pm - 9pm. All guests will receive $1 off hemp products for every 10 plastic bottles they bring in to recycle. Existing and newly converted businesses will be recognized at scheduled public events throughout the month. Details for other planned events will be announced soon. In addition to volunteer-run events across the District, dozens of hemp manufacturers, local businesses, and retailers are participating in #HEMPtober by raising awareness and sampling unique hemp products at events including: Spacycloud, Hemp Kettle Tea, Hemp2O DMV, Evo Hemp, Jay Walking Productions, and Get Hemp Butter.
