Unintentional poisoning accounts for 78% of all exposures reported nationally to US poison centers. Nearly half of the poisoning exposures reported to US poison centers involved children less than 6 years old. In California, accidental ingestions of poisonous plants and mushrooms have led to hospitalization and death. Since the passing of Proposition 64, adult use of marijuana is now legal in California, while it remains illegal under federal law. Accidental poisonings and adverse reactions to marijuana containing products are on the rise. Coupling its use with other drugs and or alcohol can increase the danger of overdose.
