Montel Williams was born in 1956 in Baltimore. He joined the Navy as a young man and eventually found himself in Los Angeles by 1991. It was in LA that he debuted the self-titled Montel Williams Show. After getting picked up for syndication by CBS Paramount Television, he stayed on the air for 17 years. It was during this time that he began to open up publicly about his MS and that he used cannabis to treat it.
This legendary morning talk show host came out in support of medical marijuana when it was still considered anathema and he eventually made a break from the network. After the Monel Williams ended in 2008 after 16 years on the air, the man moved on and opened a medical dispensary in Sacramento California called Abatin Wellness Cooperative.
After helping launch Abatin Wellness Cooperative, Williams separated from the business. Since then, he has continued to spread awareness and advocate for medical cannabis legalization. In a 2016 interview he repeated his position on recreational cannabis by saying ‘I have never been or will I ever be in favor of the full legalization of marijuana.”
Pot smoker Maher has been a proponent of legalized cannabis for a long time to put it mildly. On the Feb. 12, 2016 episode of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” host/comedian Maher lit a joint loaded with cannabis and smoked it with some of his guests, including rapper/pundit Killer Mike.
“I use medical marijuana because my third eye has glaucoma,” Maher said at the 5:44 mark in the above video. “And you know, it’s acting up right now. Maybe I should … (Maher lights a joint from his pocket with a lighter) … maybe I should treat it. This is private property, and I do have a card, so … (inhale, exhale, applause from the studio audience) … In conclusion, please remember … (coughing fit, laughter) … please remember that legalizing pot is a long way from a done deal. I know you’re tired, I am too, of making the same old, obvious pot arguments — like how pot is less dangerous than other legal adult activities. But somehow you can drink alcohol, you can smoke cigarettes.”
Was the joint rolled with real marijuana? Yes it was, Maher confirmed on Twitter. A rumor started circulating around the Internet that Maher was facing $1.7 million in fines from the Federal Communications Commission for the weed stunt.
Even though the Satira Tribune’s story was shared by a number of marijuana industry insiders on their social media, let’s add Maher’s $1.7 million fine to our ever-growing category of Fake News. (Even Snopes agrees.)
Colbert has said that smoking pot in high school influenced his comedy. “I never thought I’d be saying this, but Senator Cruz, you should move a little further to the right,” the Late Show host said of the picture, which Colbert explains was taken by an old high school friend, Bill Clark.
“Back in high school, Bill was the person I ever did something with that is now legal in Colorado,” said Colbert. Colbert then describes how the two showed up to their homecoming dance without a date, only to leave early for a smoke session provided by Clark. The problem, however, was a lack of rolling papers.
“This substance, sometimes you wrap up like presents, and then instantly destroy with fire,” Colbert further explained. “So we used the comics page from the Sunday paper, which I think might be why I’m a comedian now.”
The current host of the Late Show has had many segments throughout his time on television that have put people like John Kasich, Rand Paul, Robert Plant and even Bernie Sanders in a position to discuss marijuana policy.
After Hosting Fear Factor, Joe Rogan became a household name in America. His time on the show with an unhealthy obsession with body juices gave him the notoriety to become one of the most outspoken celebrity activists in modern America. Besides being an outspoken advocate for full legalization, Joe has developed his own brand of cannabis which can be found growing and selling around the world.
Here is a sample of the video work Joe does in his efforts to spread awareness about cannabis and legalization:
