Acapulco Gold is a sativa dominant hybrid that originated from Acapulco, Mexico. From there the strain became ­popular throughout Central America. Over time, Acapulco Gold made its way across the U.S.

Unfortunately, no one knows who created this strain first in Acapulco. And no one knows what the parents are of this strain. Even though the exact genetics are unknown, experts agree that Acapulco Gold is originally a Central American strain.

 Acapulco Gold is an award-winning strain. Barney’s Farm entered their version into the cannabis cup competition and it won the sativa cup of 2010. This strain won the sativa cup because of its long-lasting high that balanced upbeat effects with wonderful body-relaxing sensations. It also had great bag appeal by having firm colas, visible THC resin and flecks of gold and reddish brown.

A Hard Strain to Grow

Because no one knows the parents of Acapulco Gold, it’s difficult to find which seeds to cross to create your own variant. However, companies like Barney’s Farm sells female seeds of Acapulco Gold. The company Sacred Seeds doesn’t have seeds for sell, but they do provide clones.

It also has a long harvest time; it’ll be ready by mid-October. When grown indoors its flowering time is around 70 – 75 days or longer (up to 92 days). This strain can grow outdoors as well, but it prefers warm climates and likes soil. When grown outdoors, its harvest time shortens to the end of September.

The plant grows tall, and the buds are firm and completely coated in resin. Along with colorful hairs of yellow and orange the buds resembles sparkly gold nuggets. The long wait is worth the effort because it will produce high yields of over 500 gr/m^2 per plant. It can also develop a delightful amount of THC, by as much as 23%.

Acapulco Gold is usually an 80% sativa strain. However, there are several different phenotypes associated with this strain. One of those phenotypes is a sativa dominant strain that grows long and is fast-blooming. Another type is also sativa dominant that grows long but slow blooming. A third version is of a homogenous variety.
